Our Mission

Fortius Sport & Health is an integrated athlete development centre strengthened through philanthropy and focused on optimizing human performance for life.

Joanna Irvine<p>​Joanna (Jo) Irvine is a Registered Dietitian and a graduate of the specialized Sport Nutrition program from the International Olympic Committee. Over the past several years she has been providing nutrition support to a variety of teams and individual athletes including the Women's National Field Hockey team, the national BMX team, Swimming Canada and BC Gymnastics, to help optimize athletes' performance during both training and competition. Jo has also managed the Podium Fuel program based in Whistler, which provides Canadian winter athletes with high quality, sport specific meals to support them during intensive training camps.  Aside from her passion for work and drive to stay current with sport nutrition research, Jo enjoys being active and outdoors with her very energetic family.</p>
Melissa Kazan<p>​Melissa Kazan is a Registered Dietitian and Sport Nutritionist specializing in nutrition for health, well-being and sports performance. Her passion for sports and for fresh food was her major motive to become a professional in this field. After completing her undergraduate degree and Master of Science in Dietetics and Human Nutrition at McGill University in Montreal, Melissa specialized in sports nutrition through the International Olympic Committee Sport Nutrition Diploma. </p><p> With 5 years of counselling experience, working in fitness centers and medical clinics, Melissa understands today's challenges to eating well. She works with her clients, setting realistic and flexible goals to improve their overall health and sport performance as well as prevent disease. </p><p>Melissa has also spent a couple of years at the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario in Toronto, where she worked as a sport nutritionist with high performance athletes in various sports including judo, diving, synchronized swimming, figure skating and swimming. Through counselling, group seminars and cooking workshops, Melissa helped her athletes make quick, and healthy meals, as well as optimize their nutrition around training and competition, and improve their performance through proper food choices.</p><p>As a professional speaker, Melissa has provided interactive presentations and workshops to busy professionals, athletes, coaches and active individuals, turning the complex science of nutrition into practical tips for a healthy and active lifestyle.​</p><p>Outside of work, you will find Melissa going on a run or hike appreciating the beautiful Vancouver scenery. She also enjoys discovering hidden food gems in the city.</p><p>​ </p>
