 Our Team

Paul Gamble, PhD | Director, Sport Performance

Paul Gamble has worked with athletes of all ages across a multitude of sports at elite and professional levels in a career spanning two decades and both northern and southern hemispheres. Paul began his career in professional rugby union with English Premiership side London Irish, but has since worked with groups and individuals across a diverse array of sports, notably serving as National Strength and Conditioning Lead for Scottish Squash. Paul completed his PhD in 2005 and is the author of four textbooks, with a fifth title due for release in January 2018 ​. Alongside his work in the realms of physical preparation and athletic development, Paul has also worked extensively in the area of sports injury. Paul is also a track and field coach across multiple events, and during his time in New Zealand coached their #1 sprinter Joseph Millar who completed the 100m/200m sprint double at both the New Zealand and Australian Championships in 2017, and represented New Zealand in both the 100m and 200m at the IAAF World Championships held in London in August 2017.

Professional Highlights

  • Recently attended Athletics World Championships in London as part of the New Zealand team, as personal coach for Joseph Millar (NZ record holder and multiple national champion in both 100 and 200m) who competed in both 100m and 200m events

  • Successive top-four finishes for Scottish Squash men's team in European Team Championships and consecutive Commonwealth Games (men's doubles)

  • Coached New Zealand sprinter Joseph Millar from injury to personal best (2015-2016 season), and national records, New Zealand and Australian championships 100/200m double and world championships representation (2016-2017 season)

  • Author of four textbooks in physical preparation for athletes: Strength and Conditioning for Team Sports (2009); Training for Sports Speed and Agility (2011), Strength and Conditioning for Team Sports (2nd Edition) (2013); Comprehensive Strength and Conditioning (2015)

  • Fifth book due for publication in January 2018

Research Interests

  • Research fellow with AUT-SPRINZ (Sport Performance Research Institute New Zealand) and Sports Kinesiology Injury Prevention and Performance research groups

  • Supervised postgraduate research (PhD and research masters) on change of direction performance, and strength and power development for rotational and striking sports

  • Personal research interest in sports injury and rehabilitation, speed development, change of direction and agility, rotational power development​
