Our Mission

Fortius Sport & Health is an integrated athlete development centre strengthened through philanthropy and focused on optimizing human performance for life.

Pediatric Sports Medicine

Young athletes often require additional time and assessment to take into consideration the ever-changing developmental phases of childhood.

At Fortius Sport & Health our specialists focus on two types of pediatric medicine: Pediatric Rheumatology and Pediatric Sport & Exercise Medicine.

PEDIATRIC SPORT AND EXERCISE MEDICINE

Pediatric patients are at higher risk for overuse injuries and burnout. Oftentimes, an adult-based approach is not equally appropriate for children and may need to be modified. Our pediatrician is able to assess both the physical and emotional impact of an injury in the context of a child's developmental stage.

Furthermore, the pediatric specialist is able to assess for other medical conditions which may affect a child's ability to participate in sport and/or exercise such as diabetes, asthma, or post-chemotherapy. Children with a history of concussion may also need additional support to ensure safe return to learning and return to play.

SPECIALIST PEDIATRIC RHEUMATOLOGY

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is a chronic disease most often looked after by a specialist doctor known as a Pediatric Rheumatologist. Children of any age can be affected, as young as a toddler, all the way up to a teenager. The treatment of arthritis in children usually consists of medications and physiotherapy.

Questions regarding alternative causes of symptoms sometimes arise and the pediatric rheumatologist is able to assess for inflammatory causes of joint complaints. If you are concerned about juvenile arthritis or other rheumatologic condition, or your child has muscle or joint complaints (e.g., aches, pains, swellings, dysfunction in muscles or joints, including back), we can help.

BOOK AN APPOINTMENT

Appointments with our Pediatric Sport Physician/Pediatric Rheumatologist requires a referral from your family doctor, and the fees are covered under the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP).
