A true Canadian experience for Austrian youth hockey teamApril 28, 2017 | by Jehan Jiwa
When you want a youth hockey team to have an authentic road trip experience, what do you do? Bring them to Canada, of course! The managers of the Junior Capitals boys hockey team from Vienna, Austria did exactly that.
The 2017 edition of the BC King of the Rings Minor Hockey Tournament, presented by Sport Burnaby, welcomed almost 70 boys hockey teams from Canada and the US, and one from Austria. It was a great success and is yet another feather in the cap for the City of Burnaby, which continues to showcase itself as a premier host city for sporting events of all magnitudes.
Perfectly situated within walking distance from the tournament venue at Burnaby 8-Rinks and beautifully adjacent to walking trails, soccer fields and the lake, Fortius and its surroundings in Burnaby are becoming a hub for hosting a variety of sporting conferences, events and tournaments.
“It’s always special when international teams come to Burnaby to train and compete,” says Jennifer Scott, Senior Manager of Sport Burnaby. “It’s a testament to great facilities, sport partners and hosting expertise in our community. Given the number and quality of ice arenas in Burnaby, it’s no surprise that hockey teams will travel a long way to compete here.”
The Junior Capitals U-13 and U-14 teams descended upon Fortius ready to get a true taste of the Canadian hockey experience. Both teams’ players and coaches were housed in the Fortius Lodge and received healthy catered meals in the Bistro. The guests also had access to the state-of-the-art two floored Training Centre — the same one where many of their NHL hockey heroes train in the off season.
“Burnaby is the perfect sport hosting destination with the right venues, expertise and established partnerships to deliver a first-class event,” adds Scott. “Fortius Sport & Health is truly a one-stop-shop and great sport hosting partner.”
The strong partnership between Sport Burnaby and Fortius enables both the city and the facility to showcase their common interest in welcoming the world through the channel of sport.
It’s really exciting to work with sport organizations and help them discover how hosting camps and events at Fortius can support their program, as shown by the recent 2016 Junior Pan-Am Table Tennis Championships and the 2016 World Taekwondo Junior Championships,” says Scott.
The Junior Capitals’ website contains their club motto: “to play the game is good, to win is better, but to love the game is best of all.”
A mantra certainly echoed by Sport Burnaby and by Fortius, we look forward to welcoming the world to our sports mecca for future events.
The Fortius Lodge is located on the third, fourth and fifth floors of the Fortius facility. It is designed with sports teams and training camps in mind, but is open to anyone wanting to stay with us.
