January 27, 2017

Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic procedure used to assess the health of muscles and the nerve cells that control them.

Thanks to the continued support of our donors, Fortius Foundation is excited to announce the purchase of our first electromyography machine which arrived in our Institute in late January.

“Fortius Foundation is pleased to support the purchase of an EMG machine so our practitioners can continue to provide innovative, cutting-edge treatments and therapies for our clients,” shared Andy Price, Fortius Foundation’s Executive Director.

Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) are a valuable addition in a sports medicine setting to assess the electrical functioning of nerves and muscles. With the integrated rehabilitation expertise at Fortius, the addition of electrodiagnostic testing supports the timely diagnosis of medical conditions and subsequent treatment plans.

The electromyography machine transmit electrical signals through the skin that causes muscles to contract. The EMG then translates these signals and contractions into graphs, sounds or numerical values that can be interpreted by Dr. Catherine Ho, Fortius Sport Medicine Physiatrist.

In patients suffering from pain, numbness/tingling, or weakness, certified physicians with sub-specialty training can performance these diagnostic tests to assess for nerve injuries, determine severity of injuries and prognosticate recovery.

If you are interested in learning more or booking in for an EMG appointment, please talk to your sport medicine physician, or ask your family doctor to write you a referral for the Fortius Institute.

The Foundation has also just completed the purchase of a new generation ultrasound system. It is a portable, versatile tool that will be used by our physicians and for our back treatment programs to give instant, visual feedback to patients looking to activate specific muscles.

The Fortius Foundation funds and supports world-class sport and exercise medicine and science facilities, programs and other initiatives centered on collaborative research, education and innovation. It is supported by donations – both to our capital campaign and fundraising to support local programs.
