How to optimize your hockey off-season
March 23, 2017

As we enter the final stretch of hockey season, we’ve got tournaments, playoffs and team celebrations on the brain.

But, with the off-season fast approaching, it’s also time to start thinking about your summer plans. How will you optimize those precious few months to ensure you are both recovering and optimizing your training for the next season?

To help with your planning, we’ve shared a few important considerations to keep in mind.

Recovery is an important part of a yearly training plan to prevent both burnout and injury. The off-season, for any sport, allows athletes time to recover (both mentally and physically) from their rigorous training and competition schedule.

Following the season’s end, take some time to tone down the intensity of your training, try other forms of activity and give your body a well-deserved rest.

Without the manic competition schedule, the off-season also allows us to take some to reflect. It’s important to take some time to reflect on the past season and begin planning new goals for the months ahead. Ask yourself questions like: What did I do well? What can I improve on? What do I want to focus on this off-season? What are my goals for the next season?

Getting stuck? This is a great opportunity to sit down with your coach to get feedback.

Now that you’ve given yourself the opportunity to recover, reflect and set your goals, it’s time to start a training plan that will help you accomplish those goals.

In addition to a year-round player development package, the Fortius HockeySTRONG program also offers three off-season programs to help athletes optimize their performance between competition periods:

  1. Youth Competitive Hockey Program | SUMMER 2017

The Youth Competitive Hockey Program is a six-week summer program for the youth athlete (age 8-13 yrs) that is looking to initiate or enhance their training development. Participants will train three days a week with a focus on the key development focal points of movement, strength, speed and agility. Learn more >>
