KidsMove welcomes new Burnaby students in 2019
January 25, 2019 | by Andy Price, Executive Director, Fortius Foundation

The second week of January saw three more Burnaby elementary schools start their KidsMove journey.

Students and teachers from Douglas Road, Cascade Heights and Stoney Creek Elementary Schools will be attending weekly KidsMove sessions at Fortius for ten weeks.

KidsMove is funded by the Fortius Foundation, PMRI and the Steve Nash Foundation and is provided at no cost to schools.

“Our goal is to ensure that children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in a program like this have an opportunity to develop their confidence and abilities for physical activity” said Andy Price, Fortius Foundation Executive Director.

Over the course of the ten weeks, students have the opportunity to try a variety of sports, including soccer, basketball, curling and cricket. The program focuses on developing skills, helping children of all abilities to enjoy and benefit from the program.

“When we began this partnership with the Burnaby School District, they asked us to ensure that children with special needs could participate fully, and we are so happy to have been able to collaborate with teachers and education assistants to make that happen” said Price.

Whether they are an accomplished athlete, or just trying a sport for the first time, by focusing on their “best effort” each child is able to improve their abilities and, most importantly, have fun.

Nine Burnaby elementary schools will participate in the KidsMove Schools program in the 2018/19 school year. To learn more, visit our KidsMove webpage or www.stevenash.org
