Tell us a bit about your team, program or event:
Rhythmic Gymnastics is a beautiful display of specially choreographed solo and group routines that showcase the athlete’s strengths and abilities. Each routine combines gymnastics, ballet and modern dance with the use of hand-held props such as hoops, ropes, ribbons and clubs. It is very inspiring for young girls to watch and try the sport, and for all spectators to admire the elegance, flexibility and skill of the gymnasts.
What is your best team achievement or memory:
The best memory is the celebration following the awards at the biggest event, the Western Regional Championships in 2015 [held at Fortius Sport & Health]. All of our National team members qualified for the Canadian Individual Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships and all participants were rewarded with a fun party in the Fortius Bistro after the competition was over.
What are some important lessons that your sport teaches athletes:
The benefits of Rhythmic Gymnastics to girls in their formative years include physical fitness, self-discipline, positive self esteem, lasting friendships, team skills, fun and a healthy lifestyle that the gymnast will sustain for life.
What has kept you coming back to Fortius Sport & Health for multiple events:
In the past two years, The Olympia Rhythmic Gymnastics club has organized five competitions using the Fortius Gymnasium, which provided an excellent venue for both local and guest participants who could take advantage of the on-site lodging facilities.
The Olympia Cup yearly invitational was first hosted at Fortius in 2015 for one day during which 140 athletes from ten clubs competed, and expanded to two days in 2016, with a participation of 180 athletes. This year the event will bring together 200 athletes from 15 clubs on Feb. 25-26, the increased registration proving the success of using Fortius. Olympia Rhythmic Gymnastics also organized, in collaboration with BCRSGF (BC Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation), the three-day BC Provincial Championships in 2015 and 2016 and the five-day Western Regional Championships in 2015 at Fortius.
The competition venue is excellent and the staff are very helpful. We particularly appreciate when the Bistro stays open late during the events.
