New collaboration brings free youth activity programming to Burnaby youth
November 15, 2017

November 15, 2017 (Burnaby) – Fortius Sport & Health and the Burnaby School District are proud to announce a new collaboration that will integrate local activity programming into six Burnaby schools.

Starting January 2018, over 300 Burnaby elementary students, ages nine to twelve, will be travelling to Fortius once a week, for ten weeks to participate in KidsMove – a free two-hour, expert-run activity and learning session.

KidsMove was developed in June of 2016 by the REACH collaboration, comprised of Fortius Sport & Health, the Steve Nash Foundation, Pro Motion Research Institute (a sport science charity) and Integrated Athlete Development (IAD), a group of world-class sport science practitioners that includes Rick Celebrini, Ben Sporer, Anthony Findlay, David Cox, and Steve Nash.

REACH formed last year to promote science-based, purposeful application of athlete development principles to children and youth through donor-funded opportunities.  With concept, research and curriculum leadership from IAD, anchor funding from the Steve Nash Foundation, and implementation and programmatic leadership from Fortius, REACH’s first project, KidsMove, is already making a difference.

“There are many children in Burnaby that may not have opportunities to participate in organized sport and develop the key elements of physical literacy,” shared Baljinder Narang, Vice-chair of the Burnaby Board of Education. “KidsMove provides an incredible opportunity for all students to develop the skills, competency and confidence they need to be active in sport through adolescence and into adulthood.”

Delivered by strength and conditioning coaches at Fortius, the sessions involve a variety of sport and movement-based activities designed to foster the physical, mental, and lifestyle fundamentals of athlete development. KidsMove participants gain education on critical aspects of health, including physical literacy, nutrition, injury prevention, speed, agility, quickness, sleep, mental preparation, fitness, resiliency, goal-setting and more.

Earlier this fall, REACH kicked off a KidsMove schools program pilot with East Vancouver’s Grandview Elementary School. A group of 48 children are attending Fortius once a week for ten weeks to participate in the two-hour session. Watch the video above to learn more!

KidsMove also runs one free session a month, open to 60 youth from Burnaby and surrounding communities. The program is offered for free with the support of generous donors and partners including the Steve Nash Foundation, Vancouver TELUS Community Board, Canadian Tire Jumpstart, and iA Financial Group.
