Rugby-mania takes over Vancouver and FortiusMarch 24, 2017 | by Jehan Jiwa
Did you know the Fortius facility has a 50-room Lodge? From recreational to Olympic athletes and international to local teams, we host a range of incredible groups each year. We are excited to launch a new monthly spotlight highlighting some of the talented groups training and lodging with us.
BUILDING ON BRONZE
With the success of the Canadian Women’s Rugby team winning a historic first-ever bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, the sport of Rugby has grown significantly in popularity around the country. This has been made evident by the raucous crowds in attendance at the first two years of the Canada Sevens tournament held in Vancouver in both 2016 and 2017. In just two years of hosting the event, Vancouver has already seen the total attendance increase from 60,000 spectators in 2016 to well over 75,000 this year.
NATIONAL 7’S FEVER AT FORTIUS
In complement to the Canada 7’s, the National U18 7’s are also held around the same time period. Matches are hosted at the Burnaby Lake Rugby Club, just a short walk away from Fortius Sport & Health.
With the beautiful greenery of the Burnaby Lake area as the backdrop, provincial teams from across Canada on both the men’s and women’s sides engaged in battle for Rugby supremacy. Four of those teams – Quebec, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia – stayed at the Fortius Lodge for the duration of the tournament.
In addition to lodging just a stone’s throw away from the event venue, the teams also enjoyed the fruits (literally!) of Fortius’s in-house Catering services. With healthy breakfasts, lunches and dinners, the teams had the fuel they needed to keep up with the demands of the tournament.
Fortius has been a hotspot for Rugby in the past few years. In addition to hosting teams for both the National U18 and University 7’s events in the past two years, we have also welcomed Rugby Canada into the facility for training camps and we even took on some international flare when we hosted a team from New Zealand in 2016!
A SUCCESSFUL TOURNAMENT
With teams from across the country competing, it was Team BC on the women’s side, who took advantage of home field by winning Gold over Ontario in front of a packed stadium at BC Place, and in the battle of Ontario on the men’s side, Ontario 1 took home gold over Ontario 2.
With the Canada 7’s tournament back in Vancouver for the next two years, we look forward to welcoming the teams back to Fortius for more Rugby festivities in the near future!
The Fortius Lodge is located on the third, fourth and fifth floors of the Fortius facility. It is designed with sports teams and training camps in mind, but is open to anyone wanting to stay with us.
